Hi All,

Here are answers to questions:

1. Which of Jesus' parents was from the house of David lineage? 

2. When in Jesus' life was the flight into Egypt?

3. When asked if we are saved, as Catholics what would be a good answer? (disclaimer: I find this answer to be somewhat negative in tone, but it does contain all of the pertinent facts): https://www.catholic.com/tract/assurance-of-salvation

4. What does it mean when the power to bind and loose is conferred on the apostles that "this power connotes the authority to absolve sins, to pronounce doctrinal judgements, and to make disciplinary decisions in the Church?" p. 242 in workbook, also CCC553 and Matthew 18: 18-20.

 Pope Benedict's 3 volume Jesus of Nazareth-also follows well from The Bible Timeline: https://www.ignatius.com/Jesus-of-Nazareth-3-Volume-Set-P2808.aspx (can also purchase used copies on Amazon and might have some copies in the parish library). I would recommend the Holy Week volume for Lent (see the link above). From the Baptism in the Jordan to the Transfiguration is good for Ordinary Time and His Infancy and Childhood is good for Advent. I have read all 3-Pope Benedict has a nice linear writing style. You'll want to have your bible handy!

Upcoming Sessions and Other Items!

Hello All,

Beginning this coming Friday, Feb 15, we begin studying the New Testament with Lesson 18-Messianic Fulfillment-Part 1. We have 6 sessions remaining-Messianic Fulfillment Parts 1, 2, and 3 (Gospel of Luke) and The Church Parts 1, 2, and 3 (Acts). 

If you've found it difficult to keep up with the voluminous amount of unfamiliar, but fascinating, Old Testament reading (as I have!), we can now breathe a collective sigh of relief as our upcoming readings will be very familiar to us from the Mass. But I think we've all gained alot from all of this background as we move into studying the birth of the Lord and His life on earth.

Two sessions ago, I mentioned that Catholic World Report www.catholicworldreport.com has weekly commentaries on the Sunday Mass readings-here is the one from 1/26 when the OT reading was from Ezra: https://www.catholicworldreport.com/2019/01/26/today-this-scripture-passage-is-fulfilled-in-your-hearing-2/. This past Friday, we studied 1 and 2 Maccabees. I said I would send out a nice summary of the Maccabean period from the Catholic Answers website: https://www.catholic.com/magazine/print-edition/1-2-maccabees.

A question that came up on Friday was: why isn't there more in the bible regarding Caesar Augustus being called "son of god" and how the gospel of Christ is actually "politically perilous and subversive" as described in this article: https://www.catholic.com/magazine/online-edition/jesus-versus-the-son-of-god? It is such important information and most of us have only heard about this through this bible study! Unfortunately, I wasn't able to find an answer to this very good question. If others are able, please send to me for distribution.

Announcements

Hello All,

As long as St. Jerome School is not closed tomorrow, we will have bible study at 9am! 

Thank you to Joyce Lex for facilitating last week's discussion! And thank you to Joyce Lex in advance for facilitating tomorrow's session. (I just got back from Florida-sorry-this afternoon, so haven't had time to prepare). 

At last week's discussion, Joyce referenced the United States Catechism for Adults. Here is the information. questions from last Friday

Hi All,

Here are a couple of answers to questions from last Friday:

1. When did Manasseh repent? (I think you will want to read 2 Chronicles as referenced below. Also this is not a Catholic source, but I think pretty reliable).


2. Why did Hezekiah show his treasures?



I am not totally satisfied with these answers. If anyone finds another better answer, please send to me and I will distribute in early February.

Bible Study Questions & A Lenten Book Recommendation!

Hello All,

Here are answers to two recent questions:

1. What was contained in the Ark of the Covenant at the time the Jerusalem Temple was built?

2. What was the relationship between Egypt and the Divided Kingdom (Israel and Judah)?


Also, Kathy has passed along an EXCELLENT book written by Jeff Cavins that I would like to recommend for your Lenten reading. It dovetails very well from our Bible Timeline study and has many practical recommendations for becoming a disciple of Jesus: "The Activated Disciple: Taking Your Faith to the Next Level". Hello All,

I hope you've had a wonderful Christmas and I wish you a very happy and healthy 2019.

We will resume The Bible Timeline bible study on Friday January 11 at 9am with Session 13-Divided Kingdom, Part 1. We'll meet every Friday for a total of 11 sessions.

If you haven't been able to attend for awhile or have found it difficult to complete the reading, please rejoin the study!

Beginning with Session 18, Messianic Fulfillment, Part 1, the reading becomes much easier and much more familiar with the Gospel of Luke. Beginning with Session 21, The Church, Part 1, we will be reading the book of Acts-again much more familiar. And both are very good Lenten preparation.
